How it goes

Open a cell. The field is laid after it, so the first one never hits.
Count. A number says how many mines touch that cell.
Flag. Right-click, hold, or F. Flags are free and never counted against you.
Chord. Click an open number whose flags match it to open the rest around it.
Replayed. Your opens and flags go to the server with their times; it lays the same field and plays them again.
